Effective July 1, 2000, the Federal Department of Transportation through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued new rules governing marking of commercial motor vehicles.
As of July 1, 2002, all carriers required to display a USDOT number must display that number on each vehicle, prior to the vehicle being placed into service. The former “ICC MC” number is no longer required to be displayed as a vehicle identifier and may be removed at the carrier’s discretion.
As of July 1, 2005, all carriers must also display the legal name of the carrier on each vehicle in the same manner as the USDOT number. The legal name should be the same with ALL registrations involving the vehicle. Contact information for the US Department of Transportation are:
